THE TALE OF TELLUS

THE TALE OF TELLUS,

A LITERARY CONTRIBUTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

It was meant to be a childrens book, but turned out to be a classic tale for all ages to be entertained and enriched. A treasure hunt of ancient wisdom for the well educated reader and food for thought for everyone, children and adults alike. A message of environmental awareness.

A MIX OF ANCIENT WISDOMS

- I have gathered wisdom, knowledge, legends, myths and history from ancient cultures around the globe to create this story, says Dubai based author Elizabeth Schanche Lingjaerde, a long time free lance journalist and writer. Telling she got the final inspiration to write this tale after a journey to Niger in Africa where she met Tuareg tribes, nomads of the Sahara desert.

SURREAL AND SYMBOLIC

The story, which is both surreal and symbolic, begins in a made up country of woods, called Arbouria. A terrible sound is raging through the forest, frightening all of its inhabitants. A little boy called Ash is taken away with the wind, and disappears with a dragon to an unknown underworld. He is not alone with this fate. Three other children, from three equally surreal lands are brought there with him. All of them represent an element: wood, water, fire and metal. When the four children end their sudden and mystical journey inside the earth, they are led through the Gate of Knowledge to The Labyrinth of Life inside an enchanted forest. At each crossroad in the labyrinth, they are met with challenges, like riddles, to choose the right path further on. At the end awaits a monster to be conquered.

- This monster, inspired by the ancient Greek myth of Minotaurus, represents the false fires of desire, greed and speed. So there is a message here. What we do to nature, we do to ourselves. And we share the core values in life. All of us, no matter where we originate from, Lingjaerde says.

MINIATYR ART  ILLUSTRATIONS

The book is beautifully illustrated with miniature acrylic paintings by Brita Gustavsen, who has lived in Dubai since 1996.

-  When I read the manuscript, I was deeply moved by its poetic and rich language, its dreamlike landscapes and deep wisdom. It inspired me to do my best, and I now feel I have captured the essence of its poetry, she says.
