Josie Walsh - ARTE artist of the month

 

  • What inspires you? Where do your ideas come from?
    I am inspired by the artists from todays day and age, as well as from the last century, artists such as Andy Warhol and Tony Cragg are some of the major influences. The POP Art movement was a phase in art where I found a lot of my inspiration, looking at every day objects to find ideas, and how you can look at something as simple as a capsicum, and display it in an aesthetically pleasing piece of work

 

  • Greatest claim to fame (with respect to your craft)      
    I dont necessarily have a claim to fame, but one of my achievements is having many people show an interest in what I can make.

 

  • Where were you born?

I was born in the UK, Cambridge

 

7        Have you been doing your craft long?

Including dipping a toothbrush into paint and splatting it onto massive rolls of paper in a Jackson Pollock manner from the age of about 3, it would be 15 years, however taking it seriously and recognising styles and techniques and putting thought into my pieces started 5 years ago.

 

7        How did you learn your craft?
I learned how to do my craft through trial and error. Crafts in general I have picked up along the way, my mum being an active crafter I have learned a lot about different materials and how to manipulate, colour and cut them. I myself am a very tactile person and feel that art should be tactile to, or at least make you want to touch it.

 

7        Favourite film of all time?

As cheesy as it is Notting Hill, it is one movie that I cant get bored of, but I have lots of other all time favourites, along the lines of James Bond, and Entrapment.

 

  • What was the last CD you bought?

Maroon 5's latest album

 

  • Are you married?

NO

 

  • Do you have kids

No

 

  • How long have you been in the UAE

18 years

 

  • How long do you intend to stay in the UAE?

I am leaving to study Art, Design & Photography in 17 days in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

 

  • Do you belong to any other groups?

Not really, I belong to a sailing club, where I am an active member, but other than that not really

 

  • What are your favourite Materials?

String, Acrylic Paints, masking tape and my camera

 

  • What is your favourite colour?

A deep red would have to be there, a fiery orange, oh and white.

 

  • What are you reading right now?

"Still Thinking of You" - Easy Reading by a lady called Adelaide Parks, but usually Jodi Picolts books are a favourite.

 

  • Apart from creating things, what else do you do?

I sail, cook, potter and I just do.
